Project Description
The Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY approached me to design the main display for artist Sharif Bey’s “Facets” exhibit.
The display holds 40 ceramic pieces, covering 360 cubic feet of space.
The Facets display system is a four-part CNC milled, flatpack shelving system that can be assembled in various arrangements, without the need for any screws, fasteners, or adhesives.

Research and Inspiration
Before starting, I wanted get to know the work that would need to be displayed. I drew inspiration from the forms and ideas seen in Bey’s work.
I also drew inspiration from the drying racks in ceramics studios, and other forms that are used for displaying pieces like this in stores.
Ideation
The client was very clear about what they wanted the display to look like. I explored outside of the prompt, however the client always reeled it back in and told me to dive in early.
Iteration
Based on original ideation and meetings with clients, I iterated on form to see what kinds of pieces would need to be manufactured.
Big ideas start small
To explore and prove the concept, small-scale prototypes were made.
The prototypes were given to the client disassembled, allowing them to explore and practice the assembly.
A detailed breakdown was created for approval before purchasing materials.
The breakdown was also helpful for the future, in case the client needed to make their own pieces.
Measure twice, and then measure again.
